7 Bad Habits That Can Hurt Your Wood Floors

When it comes to wood floors, you really need to be careful to make sure that you don’t damage it in any way because you just didn’t know better. Sure accidents will happen; you might accidentally drop a hammer that slipped out of your hand and scratched the floor. However, it’s the other things that can slowly damage the floor and you might not even realize it. There are things that you just should not do to your wood floors, so let’s take a closer look at what these are so that you can care for your flooring and make it last longer.

1. Abrasives & Chemicals

Don’t use harsh chemicals and abrasives when you’re cleaning the floor. Do not use any products that contain ammonia. Don’t use any powdered all-purpose cleaners or dishwashing liquids. Wax or silicone-based products are also off limits. Even though products like Pledge may keep your table looking beautiful, do not use this on your wood floor either.

2. Steam Mops

Since steam mops use heat, so this should not be used. In fact, do not use water either, but if you do, do not saturate it to the point it drips. Moist is okay, but otherwise, do not even use water as best as possible. Your floor will have a protective layer and steam can eventually break this down.

3. Pouring Directly Onto Floor

If you are to use a cleaning product, do not pour it directly onto the floor in order to spread it around. It can be absorbed into the wood which will damage it, discolour it and make it swell and crack. This can cause certain places to look raised and uneven.

4. High Heels

Don’t wear high heels. Remove them before walking on your floor. High heels can cause little dents and if your high heels happen to be a little damaged themselves, it is even worse for your floors. It may be a bit of a pain, especially if you’re in a hurry, but as best as possible, remove them first before walking on your floor.

5. Unprotected Furniture Legs

Furniture is heavy, so imagine the extra weight of someone sitting in it. Make sure to put protective pads under the legs of all of your furniture. Furniture without protective padding will damage both the finish and the wood over time.

6. Don’t Drag

Don’t drag any of your furniture across the floor. In fact, don’t drag anything else such as appliances over the floor either. Make sure to lift it and place it gently down in a new position. It helps if you have someone else living with you when dealing with heavier objects. If not, make sure to use felt pads or any other form of assistance. Everyone of us is probably guilty of dragging or pulling a chair when sitting down or getting up especially when sitting at a desk or table. Be gentle!

7. Pets

Many people have dogs, but make sure to keep your dog’s nails trim and in good shape. It’s also better for the dog, but a dog’s nails can cause damage to the finish and the floor over time. And if you happen to have a Great Dane…

There you have it. A simple list of “do not’s”. Follow these tips and you’ll have beautiful wood flooring for a long time.
