4 Home Security Weaknesses You Probably Overlooked

If you have a home, one of your biggest concerns will be security. This is understandable, since it’s the one place you feel safest and most comfortable. If someone targeted your home, it makes you feel paranoid and vulnerable. Sometimes, we overlook or do things that weakens our home’s defences and without even realizing it, we’ve given an invitation to burglars. Let’s take a look at some of these things that aren’t generally looked upon as a problem.

1. Pet Doors

A pet door might make it easy for Rover to come in and out as he pleases. However, an incorrectly installed pet door or choosing the wrong one can actually send an invitation to a burglar, since it’s now a point of access. Firstly, have a quality door that’s installed by a professional. Then, use an electronic dog door kit. Only the dog’s collar will activate the door and keep out other animals like raccoons. As a further deterrence, have a prominent “BEWARE OF DOG” sign. Burglars don’t want noise or attention, so this adds a little bit more of security.

2. Garage Door Windows

Some garage doors have windows at the top which may look nice, but it’s actually a wonderful way for burglars to have a look at all the nice things you have without even entering your home. Use a door with no windows in it. If you must have windows, use frosted ones so that it’s hard to take a peek. Turn on exterior lights near your garage door at night.

3. Storage Sheds

Storage sheds have some really nice things in it, don’t they? It may contain saws, perhaps a ladder, hammers and other tools. Well, burglars think these are nice things too. In fact, how ironic it would be if a burglar used your own tools to break into your home. They wouldn’t even have to come prepared. Make sure that your storage shed is locked and secure, or contact a locksmith to ensure the locks are in working order. Many times, it isn’t. If possible, have an alarm installed, just in case.

4. Don’t Hide House Keys

Many people still unbelievably hide their house keys under a mat, a rock or some other place that will never fool the smart burglars. They’ll find it and use it. Instead, give it to a trusted neighbour or use a deadbolt with an electronic keypad. Make sure to change the code periodically, otherwise certain numbers will fade and burglars may guess the numbers to press.

Make sure your huge flat screen (or other things like keys and wallets) cannot be seen from the outside of your front window. If people can see expensive items from the curb, consider moving things around. Little things like this can play a part in keeping your home a bit more safer.
